The Arctic has features of both glacial and periglacial processes. Some areas of the Arctic are permanently frozen and have glaciers in the highland areas and ice sheets. In other areas the surface layer of the ground thaws during the summer (the active layer) while deeper layers are permanently frozen (permafrost) resulting in different features.
